Last night, on the evening of March 23rd,  the snow was extremely heavy in and around Denver.   Really heavy !!!  The 23rd of March, 2010 started out with sunshine and by late in the afternoon, heavy rain, soft hail(Grapple), lightning and thunder was being reported which quickly changed to very heavy snow until just after midnight.   Snow continued through the morning rush, numerous flights, schools, and businesses closed due to the slick roads.    The snow is moving  into the Texas Panhandle, clearing is in the forecast for Denver.

13 mile NNE of Aurora CO  10″

1 mile east of Castle Rock – 11.5″

5 miles NE of Denver – 8″

4 miles W of Denver – 9.4″

5 miles NW of Denver – 7″  (National Weather Service Employee)

2 miles S of Boulder – 7.9″

More Snow for Denver !!! 3/23 and 3/24 Winter Storm Warning

Snow will spread across the area Tuesday, becoming heavy in the Foothills during the afternoon and night, also heavy in the urban corridor Tuesday Night into Wednesday Morning.

Expected Snow Amounts:

7 to 16″ in the Southern Foothills

6 to 14″ in the Palmer Divide

5-10″ in the Denver Metro Area.

Also a Gust NE wind of 15 to 25 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Denver-March Snow Storm for Friday

A Winter Storm Warning has been Posted for the Denver Metro Area.  Today, March 18th, clouds and sun will be the rule with highs in the 60′s.    Tonight,  the weather begins to change as a potent storm develops and colder air moves in changing rain to snow.  Friday, snow and blowing snow will be the big weather story with highs only around the upper 20s with temperatures falling into the teens by Friday night.   Moderate to Heavy Snowfall can be expected in the mountains, the front range foothills & the adjacent high plains late tonight into Friday March 19th.  6 to 12″ of snow are likely.   Secondary roads and neighborhoods will likely be the problem areas as they become snow and slush covered.  Strong upslope NE wind gusting up to 30 miles per hour will also cause blowing and drifting of the snow.

Flooding/New York City & Long Island to Philadelphia 3/13 & 3/14

A Flood Watch was in effect from Saturday morning the 13th of March through Sunday morning the 14th.  Light rain Friday will become steadier and heavier into Saturday.  Rainfall totals of 2 to 4″ is possible, this along with the existing snowpack will result in poor drainage and river flooding across mary areas.   Due to the saturated grounds and high water tables across coastal areas, basement flooding is possible.  The rainfall will lighten by Sunday March 14th.  Numerous flood warnings are now in effect.  Go to NOAA for more info.

TORNADO WATCHES/WARNINGS/SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MID SECTION

A Tornado Warning was up until 11:30 CST for Central Audrain County in Central Missouri, NE Callaway County in MO and Montgomery County in East Central Missouri.  Take Cover Now.   This storm was 7 miles SE of Fulton and moving North at 30 miles per hour.   St. Louis is under a tornado watch until 2 am on March 11th, 2010.   New Orleans is also under a tornado watch.

World’s Worst Weather !

Mount Washington Observatory has been monitoring the elements at one of the planet’s most extreme places.   Mount Washington is a rocky, windswept summit in New Hampshire with bitter cold, dense ice fog, heavy snow, and record wind gusts.   The Observatory sits at 6, 288 feet and has earned the title of the Worst Weather on the Globe.   I am writing this at 6:59 pm West Coast Time, 9:45 pm at Mount Washington, NH.  The temperature at 9:45 pm on March 4th, 2010 is 9.9 degrees with the wind out of the NE at 39.5 miles per hour making the wind chill 14.9 degrees below zero.  Burrrrrrr

NOTE: New Hampshire’s Mount Washington has LOST its distinction as the place with the highest wind gust ever recorded on Earth.    It used to be 231 miles per hour at Mount Washington, NH.  A panel from the World Meteorological Organization was reviewing extreme weather and climate data and they turned up a 253 mile per hour gust on AUSTRALIA’S BARROW ISLAND during CYCLONE OLIVIA IN 1996.

MOUNT WASHINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE
