WASHINGTON DC WILL LIKLEY SEE 20 TO 30 inches + with blowing and drifting snow and a Blizzard Warning is in effect tonight into Saturday!!! First of all, a mix of light rain and light snow is falling all over the plains and midwest Thursday Feb 4th. As Friday the 5th rolls around, colder air moves in and 1 to as much as 3″ of snow is possible with isolated amounts to 4″. Winter Weather Advisories(purple shades on the map below) are in effect from SE Montana to Eastern Kansas, Most of Missouri and part of IL.
A large storm system will be moving across the central U.S., St. Louis will likely see 1 to 4″ by Friday evening.
SWITCHING THE FOCUS TO THE EAST COAST: ONE OF THE WORST WINTER WEATHER WARNINGS YOU CAN BE UNDER IS A BLIZZARD WARNING ! Washington DC, PARTS OF NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE ARE UNDER A BLIZZARD WARNING, SHADED IN RED FROM DC to ATLANTIC CITY TO LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ. PHILADELPHIA HAS A WINTER STORM WARNING WITH SOME HEAVY SNOW IN THE FORECAST.
Watching the exact track of this dangerous winter storm and timing is very important. A shift in the track further north would result in a widespread significant snowfall for NYC and a Winter WEATHER ADVISORY has been posted Friday Evening into Saturday, AND A WINTER STORM WARNING JUST SOUTH OF NEW YORK CITY AND very heavy snow is very likely around Atlantic City.
Computer models as of Thursday afternoon are predicting the amounts below for Friday night into Saturday:
New York City: One is predicting 2″, another 0 to a trace, and another 4″. ( This could change with a jog to the north) NOTE: WEATHER COMPUTER MODELS AS OF FRIDAY EARLY: NOW ONE SAYS 1″, ANOTHER STILL SAYS HARDLY ANY, AND A THIRD STILL SAYS 8″ !!! A WINTER STORM WATCH IS STILL POSTED FOR MANHATTAN, ALL 5 BOROUGHS AND LONG ISLAND.

Philadelphia: 3 weather computer models are predicting 8″ and a Winter Storm Warning is in effect. THURSDAY COMPUTER MODELS SAY 12″ FOR PHILLY, 8″ AT THE VERY LEAST ON 2 OTHERS. AS OF FRIDAY MORNING THE COMPUTER MODELS FORECAST 8-10″ ON AVERAGE.

Sussex Co. NJ: One computer model is predicting 4″, another SAYS 4″ and still another 2″. NEWER COMPUTER MODELS LOWER THE AMOUNTS A BIT IN SUSSEX CO. STILL SNOWY!
Islip, NY(central Long Island): one computer model is predicting 1″ and another 4″, still another 0 to a trace. (No Advisories as of Thursday afternoon) Feb. 4th. A WINTER STORM WATCH CONTINUES FOR LONG ISLAND AND THE NEWER COMPUTER MODELS SAY 3″ AT ISLIP, ONE STILL SHOWS NOT MUCH, ANOTHER IS NOW SHOWING 6″ AND WINDY.

District of Columbia Snow Totals: as of 9:05 am on 1/31/10 5″ at the National Arboretum and 4″ Logan Circle. Maryland: Annapolis 7.5 on Jan. 30th and 5.5″ Near Baltimore Washington International Airport.
A Winter Storm Warning for 3 to 6″ of snow was up for Washington DC, Gaithersburg, Leesburg and Fairfax until the morning of Feb 3rd, 2010. A Winter Weather Advisory is up until the morning of Feb. 3rd for 2 to 4″ of snow from Philadelphia to Atlantic City. Light Snow will also be a problem in New York City for the morning commute on Feb. 3rd. 1 to 2″ of snow is expected. Snow is likely again on Friday Night into Saturday.
Jet Steam End of Jan. into the Beginning of Feb.
The Jet Stream is a very fast river of air in the upper levels of the atmosphere and in the GFS weather model below, it is the blue and purple area or the Jet Stream, that dives north to south off of the California coast and the purple area is called a Jet Max with over 150 mph wind that steers the storm systems away from the Northwest. This week and into the weekend, Seattle will only see occasional weak weather systems with lighter rain at times. California will continue with the risk of showers from time to time and cool weather. New York City will continue chilly with the occasional risk of some snow showers as the main Jet stays mainly south of Manhattan or directly overhead. So, below is my forecast for Seattle, Hollywood, and New York City for the first week in Feb.
