About Meteorologist Jim Castillo – KTLA 5 in Los Angeles, California
Jim Castillo, whose birth name is James, is an American meteorologist. Jim’s wonderful mother was extremely ill with Multiple Sclerosis and lived in St. Louis where his father and dear family friend Kathy were her amazing caretakers. Jim’s mother and father are true Americans that have a mix of American Indian, German, Irish and Spanish Blood. They are the true American Family. Jim’s Great Great Grandmother on his mother’s side is 100% Cherokee Indian and his Father also has Cherokee & Lakota Indian Blood. The mix is very similar to the people of Argentina, Indian Blood mixed with European Blood. His parents used to hold hands in college and Jim’s father was always asked, “why do you hold your sister’s hand”? It was obvious that people thought Jim’s mother and father looked alike. Jim’s parents were married for over 51 years. Jim’s mother Judy lost her VERY LONG battle with MS on March 17th, 2010, she is finally resting peacefully. Castillo is the 6pm and 10pm Meteorologist at KTLA 5 in Los Angeles on both Saturday and Sunday, also, he does the 1pm every Thursday and Friday and fills in for Vera during the week Jim thinks it is the greatest group of people he has ever worked with in television news.
Castillo worked as the chief meteorologist at Q-13 in Seattle from the inception of their news broadcasts in 1997 until moving to KCBS-TV Los Angeles, the #2 television market, in 2001 and while Jim was on the evening news, KCBS won a Golden Mic and an Emmy. Then, Castillo moved to the #1 television market at WNYW Fox 5 in New York City and did the weather for the 10 p.m. newscast until 2005. The 10 PM Newscast won an Emmy for the first time in a decade when Jim was on the 10 O’Clock News.
Jim is a hard working, motivated individual, that is dependable and loves to lead. He has a passion for translating news, weather and any information in an entertaining and easy to understand format. Jim is a leader in the social media front in North America, with a loyal following. His dear friend Jenni Hogan in Seattle has him beat when it comes to Twitter:) Jenni works at KIRO 7 in Seattle and is like a sister to him. * In 2008, Jim was on the team at ABC-TV in Seattle when RTNDA announced the group as winners of one of the highest honors in electronic media, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence demonstrating outstanding skills and abilities to all on the team at ABC in Seattle in the large market television category.
*Jim was also on the 11 am show at ABC Seattle when they won an Emmy in 2008 & another Emmy in 2009. The 2008 coverage was on a big snow event in Seattle and Jim was the Meteorologist covering the storm.
*In New York City, market #1 at FOX 5 News he was on the 10pm newscast when they won an Emmy for the first time in a decade.
*Jim was also on the Evening news at KCBS-TV in Los Angeles when they won an Emmy for BEST Newscast and earned a Golden Mic when he was on the 11pm News at KCBS-TV in 2001.

I’ve trained on windows, the iMac, I shoot and edit my own video on iMovie and produce and write my own work, I’ve reported stories on the news, preformed weather casts as a Meteorologist, I’ve been Chief Meteorologist in 3 markets including New York, Los Angeles & Seattle, I’ve learned a great deal of management skills, I’ve trained on many computers including Weather Central’s systems ESP: Live, 3D: Live, Microcast, WSI and Barrens Doppler Radar. I forecast and produce my own weather shows.

Jim is honored to be the first Weekend 6PM & 10PM Meteorologist that KTLA has ever hired in the television station’s long history. Not only can you see him on Saturday and Sunday, but he also does the 1PM broadcast on Thursday and Friday. Additionally, he has been filling in for Vera & Jessica during the weekdays. Jim has worked many years in television news top markets with the nicest groups of people.
Castillo was the Chief Meteorologist at Q-13 Fox in Seattle (also a Tribune-owned station). He was part of the very successful inception of their news broadcasts in 1997. Later, he was offered the Chief Meteorologist position in the #2 market at KCBS-TV in Los Angeles. In 2001, while Jim was on the evening news, KCBS noted ratings gains and went on to win a Golden Mic and Emmy. Then, Castillo was offered a job in the #1 television market at WNYW Fox 5 in New York City, doing weather for the 10PM newscast until 2005. The 10PM newscast won an Emmy for the first time in a decade while Jim was on their 10 O’clock News. Jim’s broadcasting career began while still attending the University of Missouri in Columbia. After being a cheerleader for three full years and staying on the Dean’s list, he did an internship at KOMU-TV where they asked him to become the weekend weather caster. He quickly secured the weekday-evening position until he graduated a year later. Jim was honored to be offered an internship to work with the very famous WGN Meteorologist, Tom Skilling in Chicago, yet decided to take his first offer in South Texas where he could learn to report on tropical weather while earning an income. Jim is a hard working, motivated and dependable individual and leader. He has a passion for translating weather news and any information in an entertaining and understandable format.
